Description
An original tractate from Daniel Bomberg’s monumental first complete edition of the Babylonian Talmud.
Temurah, treating principally the laws governing the attempted substitution of one consecrated animal for another, together with related questions of sacrificial sanctity. Venice: Daniel Bomberg, 1522.
Bomberg’s first complete Talmud, printed in Venice between 1520 and 1523, constitutes one of the great landmarks in the history of Hebrew printing. Produced with the assistance of an exceptional circle of Jewish scholars and correctors, the edition established the familiar architecture of the printed Talmudic page, with the Gemara surrounded by Rashi and Tosafot, and became the typographical foundation upon which subsequent editions were built.
The present Temurah belongs to this celebrated first edition. It comprises 34 folios.
Title-page borders reinforced, with light staining. An early ownership inscription or name at the head of fol. 2a has been inked out. Signs of use throughout. Lower portion of fol. 34 repaired. Attractively rebound in full dark leather, richly blind-tooled, with gilt-lettered spine.
Provenance: The distinguished library of Mr. Marvin Shick, a prominent scholar, communal figure, and discerning collector whose library reflected a lifetime of dedication to classical Jewish learning and heritage.
