Auction 1 - Rare Hebrew Books, Manuscripts & Rabbinic Letters
Lot 41:
Description
Autograph postcard written by R. Yechiel Yaakov Weinberg (1884–1966) from Montreux, Switzerland, to R. Simcha Elberg (1905–1993) of Brooklyn, distinguished rabbinic scholar and longtime editor of the journal HaPardes.
The postcard begins with practical publishing matters. R. Weinberg reports the price of a recent publication, notes the number of copies in his possession, records those already sold, and lists nearly a dozen committed purchasers together with their names and addresses to whom copies should be sent. Beyond its bibliographical interest, the letter provides a revealing snapshot of the personal networks through which Hebrew rabbinic literature continued to circulate internationally in the years following the Second World War.
R. Weinberg then informs R. Elberg that, upon returning from an upcoming journey, he hopes to submit an article for publication in HaPardes. He concludes with a striking reflection on the proper role of contemporary rabbinic scholarship, suggesting that rabbinic journals should devote themselves to addressing the pressing halakhic questions of the day rather than publishing abstract dialectics:
