Autograph postcard written by R. Aryeh Tzvi Partzovitz (1879–1948), longtime rabbi of Troki (Trakai), Lithuania and father of the celebrated Rosh Yeshivah R. Nachum Partzovitz, addressed to the Va’ad ha-Yeshivot in Vilna.
Responding to the Va’ad’s appeal for assistance in strengthening and supporting the yeshiva world, R. Partzovitz expresses his sincere regret that, owing to the difficult and unsettled circumstances in which he presently finds himself, he is unable to comply with their request. The letter offers a poignant glimpse into the financial, political and communal challenges confronting provincial Lithuanian rabbis during the final years b7kefore the destruction of European Jewry.
R. Partzovitz then takes the opportunity to address a personal request to R. Aharon Berek, the devoted secretary and close confidant of R. Chaim Ozer Grodzenski (1863–1940), asking him to inquire whether R. Chaim Ozer had yet written a letter previously requested of him on behalf of a R’ Levin, a matter, he notes, that also bears directly upon his own affairs. The postcard thus preserves a revealing glimpse into the informal channels through which rabbinic leadership and communal advocacy were conducted in interwar Lithuania, with the office of R. Chaim Ozer serving as a central point of contact for rabbis throughout the region.
