Description
The first printed edition of Tractate Horayot, issued as part of Daniel Bomberg’s monumental first complete edition of the Talmud Bavli (1520–1523). Never before printed by the Soncino press or any earlier Hebrew printer, the present volume established the text and foliation that have remained standard in all subsequent editions of the tractate.
Unlike the majority of masechtot in the Bomberg Talmud, Horayot preserves an important textual supplement: following Maimonides’ Commentary on the Mishnah (ff. 16a–18a), Bomberg printed the text of the Talmud Yerushalmi to Horayot, thereby preserving one of the earliest and most authoritative printed recensions of that work. Modern scholarship has noted the exceptional textual quality of this printing, which remained the standard version for centuries.
An appealing scholarly copy. A contemporary reader has supplied numerous marginal citations identifying the precise Biblical verses quoted throughout the tractate, reflecting the close textual study for which early printed Talmudim were prized.
